The market town of Stratford-upon-Avon was one of the main centres for distributing sheep and wool from the major sheep-producing area of The Cotswolds nearby. The town was also known for making gloves in the 15th and 16th centuries.
John Shakespeare moved to Stratford in 1551 and became a successful glove maker. He married Mary Arden and they had eight children – including one William Shakespeare in 1564.
Today it is an important tourist hotspot, thanks to the world-famous playwright. As well as tourism and hospitality, other industries in Stratford including IT, insurance, and boat building.
