Things To Do In Coventry

Where to Shop

The city centre is ideal for browsing and shopping with a huge range of high-street brands and independent shops.

For local products including fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as crafts, go shopping in the old-fashioned indoor market in Coventry.

West Orchards shopping centre is in the heart of Coventry. There are more than 40 high-street brands and a food court in the five-storey building.

Three miles from the city centre is the huge Arena Park with popular brands such as Marks & Spencer, Next and Decathlon.

Cannon Park has a good selection of high-street brands. What we really love is Asian Street Foods serving South-East Asian cuisines including Thai and Malaysian.

Where To Eat

You can’t visit Coventry without popping into the Golden Cross for a pint or a meal. This 16th-century Tudor building has lovely beamed ceilings, stained-glass windows and a wood-burning stove. Food is traditional British such as fish and chips, steak and ale pie, and burgers.

Arco is a family-run Italian restaurant with a fine line in cocktails. We love the decor and ambience as well as with the fab pasta, pizzas and other dishes.

The Town Wall Tavern, near to the theatre, serves traditional British food such as fish and chips; ham, egg and chips, and faggots.

For breakfast or lunch, the Playwrights Café is hard to beat. The all-day breakfast is great value and there’s a fine selection of sandwiches, wraps, eggs and jacket potatoes as well as main courses that are fab value for money too.

Going Out

We definitely recommend you find time to visit Fargo Village at least once. This former car-radiator plant has been turned into a creative arts space with live music, markets, workshops, shops, art studios, street-food stalls, and the Twisted Barrel Ale Brewery and Tap House

On Fridays, Dhillons Bar at the award-winning Dhillons Brewery is open where you can sample the range of craft beers.

Kasbah nightclub is popular with students and holds many drinks promotions, live music and special events.

Glamorous is superb for a fun night out with drag artists, music, food and a dance floor. It is close to the city centre and is arguably one of the largest gay bars in Coventry.

What To Do

The top attraction is Coventry Cathedral. You can see the ruins of St Michael’s Cathedral and climb the 180 steps of the Gothic spire to enjoy far-reaching views over the city. The new cathedral has a breathtaking futuristic organ, stained glass and Jacob Epstein’s bronze statue of St Michael’s victory over the devil.

For the largest publicly-owned collection of British vehicles anywhere in the world, step inside the Coventry Transport Museum. This museum celebrates the city’s transporting feats which changed the world.

To see how Coventry looked in the Middle Ages, head for St Mary’s Guildhall. This fine half-timbered and brick building with stained-glass windows is one of the finest guildhalls in England.

To discover more about Coventry’s history, make time to visit the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum. As well as artifacts relating to Coventry’s social and industrial history, the art gallery has a fine collection of paintings from esteemed artists including David Hockney, Stanley Spencer and TS Lowry.

If you enjoy a lively game of football, cheer on Coventry City currently playing in the Championship.
